JEWELLERY CARE

At OmniStyl, we believe in creating jewelry that lasts. Follow these simple care tips to keep your accessories looking as good as new.

1. Care for Copper-Based Jewellery

Copper-based alloys, such as brass (an alloy of copper, zinc, and other metals) and bronze (an alloy of copper and tin), are naturally soft and delicate. Proper care ensures their longevity and retains their beauty.

Care Instructions:

  • Avoid Water Exposure: Remove jewellery before bathing, swimming, or engaging with chemicals in water.

  • Minimise Chemical Contact: Avoid direct exposure to perfumes, hairsprays, lotions, hand sanitizers, household cleaning products, and heat sources.

  • Handle with Care: Keep jewellery away from sharp or rough surfaces to prevent scratches.

  • Remove During Physical Activities: Take off your jewellery before vigorous exercise or sleeping to prevent damage or breakage.

  • Clean Gently: Use a soft cloth to wipe your jewellery after use to remove any residue.

  • Store Properly: Keep each piece in an individual airtight pouch or box to prevent tarnish and scratches.

2. Care for Sterling Silver Jewellery

Sterling silver contains 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper (and other metals), making it prone to tarnishing due to exposure to oxygen, water vapour, and sulphur gases in the air. While rhodium or gold plating on sterling silver helps slow down oxidation, proper care is essential to maintain its lustre.

Care Instructions:

  • Avoid Sulphur-rich Substances: Prevent contact with items like eggs, mustard, onions, latex, sulphur-dyed fabrics, and sulphate-based shampoos, as they cause tarnishing.

  • Polish Regularly: Use a special silver polishing cloth or a soft, lint-free cloth to clean your jewellery.

  • Avoid Water Exposure: Remove jewellery before entering chlorinated pools, hot tubs, spas, or saltwater.

  • Limit Chemical Contact: Avoid direct exposure to perfumes, hairsprays, lotions, and household cleaning agents, as they can damage plating.

  • Clean Occasionally: Wash gently with warm water and mild soap. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a soft cloth.

  • Handle Delicately: Remove jewellery before sleeping to prevent breakage of delicate parts.

  • Store Properly: Keep in an airtight pouch or box, away from items emitting sulphur odours.

Benefits of Sterling Silver:

  • Hypoallergenic and suitable for sensitive skin.

  • Naturally antimicrobial.

  • Helps regulate body heat.

  • An affordable and durable precious metal.

3. Care for Freshwater Pearl Jewellery

Freshwater cultured pearls are naturally formed from nacre, a material secreted by mollusks, primarily made of calcium carbonate (85%) and conchiolin (a protein). This delicate composition requires careful handling to preserve their natural beauty and shine.

Care Instructions:

  • Avoid Physical Strain: Remove pearl jewellery during vigorous exercise or before sleeping to prevent string breakage.

  • Keep Away from Water: Avoid wearing pearls while bathing or swimming to protect them from waterborne chemicals.

  • Handle Delicately: Avoid flames, as they can weaken or break the string.

  • Limit Chemical Contact: Keep pearls away from perfumes, hairsprays, lotions, sanitisers, vinegar, bleach, ammonia, and direct heat.

  • Prevent Abrasion: Store separately to protect pearls from sharp or rough surfaces.

  • Clean Carefully: Wipe gently with a soft cloth after use.

  • Proper Storage: Store in a soft cloth pouch and avoid hanging pearl necklaces to prevent stretching of the string.

4. Care for Stainless Steel Jewellery

Stainless steel is a durable alloy made primarily of iron and chromium (10.5–30%), which provides corrosion resistance. Other elements like carbon, nickel, manganese, and molybdenum enhance its strength and formability, making it ideal for everyday wear.

Care Instructions:

  • Avoid Water Exposure: Remove jewellery before bathing or swimming to prevent exposure to chemicals.

  • Minimise Chemical Contact: Avoid direct exposure to perfumes, hairsprays, lotions, hand sanitizers, and household cleaning products.

  • Handle with Care: Protect jewellery from sharp or rough surfaces to maintain its polished finish.

  • Prevent Breakage: Remove jewellery during exercise or sleeping to avoid damage.

  • Clean Regularly: Wipe gently with a soft cloth to remove dirt and maintain shine.

  • Store Safely: Place each piece in an individual airtight pouch or box to protect it from scratches and tarnish.

By following these guidelines, you can enjoy the timeless elegance of your jewellery for years to come. Proper care ensures that each piece retains its beauty, durability, and sentimental value.
